Shelter from the Storm, Inc. was formally founded in 2023, but its roots reach back much further — to years of watching what abuse takes from a family, and from a person, and refusing to accept that nothing could be done.
Our work is grounded in a simple conviction: no one should have to choose between safety and shelter. No mother should have to weigh "leaving" against "where will the children sleep tonight." No survivor should hear "we don't have space" when they finally find the courage to ask for help.
We are here so that the answer is always yes — yes, you are believed; yes, you are safe; yes, there is a way forward.
What we do
We provide safe housing, recovery resources, and a supportive community for survivors of domestic violence and abuse in the Central Indiana region. Every service we offer is provided at no cost. Every conversation we have is confidential. Every door we open stays open.
How we work
We work in close partnership with churches, county services, advocates, law enforcement, and a network of volunteers across our region. We're a small nonprofit doing big work, and we depend on neighbors who are willing to help carry it.
Why we do it
Our founder will tell you it began with a single story — one person, one moment of realizing that the cost of doing nothing was higher than the cost of trying. That conviction shapes everything: from how we answer the phone, to how we set a guest room, to how we sit with someone through the hardest day of their life.
Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction. — James 1:27
That verse is not a slogan — it's a practice. It's why we exist. It's the standard we hold ourselves to, every day.
